Gear Shift Mug — Misfit

A wheel-thrown mug with a band of sgraffito carving around the base — fine line work scratched through pale slip to reveal the clay beneath. Over the top, a warm tobacco-brown glaze pools and runs down in thick dark drips, catching black where it gathers.

Roughly 4 inches tall, holds about 9 oz.

Why this one is a Misfit

The glaze ran further than intended over the carved band and made it all the way to the bottom, where it fused to the kiln shelf during firing. I've sanded the foot back smooth, so the mug sits perfectly flat and level with nothing sharp or rough to catch on a table.

What's left is a cosmetic mark on the foot ring where the glaze was removed. It doesn't affect how the mug sits, holds liquid, or washes — it's fully functional and food safe. That's the only reason it isn't full price.
